Gamblers Anonymous
by Rodger Thompson
by Rodger Thompson
Many of us who would not think of participating in the vice of gambling belong to a secret society I am calling "Gamblers Anonymous." No it is not a twelve step group for addicted gamblers, although many of us are probably addicted. I am talking about those of us who live on consumer credit. If you think about it, consumer credit is really a gamble. When we swipe that credit card or sign the loan papers for that new car, we are gambling on the chance that we will continue to be gainfully employed until we get the thing paid for. When we live just one paycheck away from being destitute we don’t like to think about all the things that could happen to take away our paycheck.
The present economic downturn in the nation has begun to come home to roost here in Wichita with thousands of layoffs. Compound that with inflation, the ever present possibility of a medical crisis or a disabling accident or any one of a dozen other things that could strip us of our earning power, and suddenly we are faced with serious financial dilemma.
The Bible warns us about living off of debt.
Proverbs 22:7 (NIV)
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
The Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey that meets here every Sunday afternoon at 4 pm is challenging many of us to eliminate debt and prepare our finances so we can face whatever might come with peace of mind. If we say we are trusting in the Lord to
provide for us it only makes sense that we would want to follow what he says in the Bible. The time to act is now. Anonymous gamblers, let’s come out of the closet and put our debt habit behind us forever.
Yours for financial peace, Rodger
